This is a great book for beginners and for those who may have had the experience of reading other histories of Islam. I found that the interpretations offered by Dr Nicolle were well considered and reasonable. I was able from my past reading put perspective to what i had read somewhere else and apply it to my overall knowledge of the time and the forces in place in those times. If i ever taught a course on Islam, i'd make this book one of the essential texts.
