Exceptional reading. I have been a Russian history buff for a long time and I was and still am impressed.

Wonderful book - terrible topic
This is an extremely well written history of the Gulog. The fact that the people of an entire country and empire could be treated so ruthlessly in modern times is frightening. Congratulations to Anne Applebaum for shedding a light on this dark history. This book was easier reading than Solzhenitsyn's Gulog Archipelago.
