This is another of the books in the Wonders of the World series. Each book stands alone. This one is set in Alexandria, Egypt during the time of Caesar and Cleopatra. I learned a lot about the city and the time period; the famous lighthouse was the tallest structure in the world at that time (400 feet) and the fire that destroyed the famous library of Alexandria when Caesar accidentally set it on fire burning ships in the harbour to prevent the Egyptian army from attacking. I also learned that the Ptolemys had a policy of pulling the books off any ship that came into port for copying. They expanded it to include any books that came in from any route. They would copy the book, and then usually keep the original and return the copy to the owner. Thus it became the largest library in the ancient world. I find the concept of a library being burned very distressing, since I love my library so much. I didn't particularly love the main character, Sophia, Keeper of the Lighthouse terribly much because she was so bitter and mean, but she came around by the end. A few plot twists as well, as is usual in T.L.Higley's books.
