Recorded for broadcast at London's Royal Albert Hall on October 14, 1977, the show caught Renaissance teaming up with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductor Harry Rabinowitz, at a time when their commercial stock was probably at its peak. Novella was fresh onto the racks, A Song for All Seasons was percolating, and the group's ambition seemed endless. The new album's "Midas Man" may have been among that set's weakest tracks, but here it shines with rare beauty, while "Mother Russia" and "Touching Once" both revel in the added drama of the orchestra. But it's "Ashes to Ashes" that truly makes this a remarkable album, as it expands far beyond its studio confines to reveal a band at the peak of its powers. The interplay between band and orchestra is breathtaking, while Annie Haslam's vocals ring out with such depth and purity that it's hard to believe that this is a live recording. The regular concert ends there; two bonus tracks, however, give the disc extra energy, as "Prologue" slips out of a concert recorded in Asbury Park that same year, while the closing "You, Pts. 1-2" raids the band's studio vault for a song that never deserved to remain unreleased for so long. ~ Dave Thompson, Rovi
