The question of how gene expression proceeds in higher organisms, ie how genetic information is realized, is one of the most exciting problems in modern biology. Much effort has been addressed to this topic, and great progress has been made during the las years. An exponentially increasing body of literature deals with such questions as: how are programmes of specific gene repertoires activated and controlled during cell proliferation, cellular development and differentiation; which genes drive and control morphogenesis, and which genes trigger the controllers; what sets of genes are expressed in fulfilling tissue-specific tasks, and how is their regulation linked to the superior levels of control hierarchy; how different tissues speak to each other in a complex organism to co-ordinate their activities; and how do viral regulators reprogram the cellular machinery for their own benefit. This book makes an attempt to introduce some concepts of what we presently know about gene regulation. Since many fundamental insights have been gained in more or less specialized systems, some explanations are given as a glossary spread over the whole text that is intended to facilitate understanding of the biological background. A compilation of these keywords is given at the end of the text. For more detailed background information, the reader is referred to textbooks. Those readers intending to make further use of the bibliography can purchase it in computer-readable form on floppy disk.
