Excerpt from Gammer Gurton's Needle: By Mr. S., Mr. Of Art Scholarly persons, living in academic celibacy, have often a singular taste for the manners of low life, and find in the crude humour and gross speech of the rustic a diversion from the niceties of classical culture. Bobert Burton of Christ Church, who was a prey to the melancholy he made famous, is said to have found relief only by going to the bridge-foot and hearing the ribaldry of the bargemen, which rarely failed to throw him into a violent fit of laughter and we may well assume that Mr. S. Of Christ's College, who could portray a slang ing-match so admirably, must have gleaned some amuse ment from the rustic life and speech of the fen country.
