They have been principally selected from the collection of. French Woodwork bought by the authorities of the South Kens'ington Museum in 1895, and now divided amongst the various National Museums. After mature consideration, and acting upon the advice of several French experts, I have decided on dividing the centuries into early, middle, and late, and when a king's name is mentioned it is to suggest that the design and carving are typical of the style prevalent during his reign, rather than to assert that the work was actually carried out in his lifetime. Good, ex-library, with typical markings, including perforated stamps touching a corner of the plates in the second and third sections. Rebound, binding strong, text pages can be fragile at hinges, plates have cloth hinges. Brown buckram. First series: [viii] 8 pp plus 18 bw plates. Second Series: [viii] 8 pp., plus 18 plates. Third Series: [viii] 10 pp., plus 18 plates. Scarce. Very large plates show great detail. Series 1: Late Fifteenth and Early Sixteenth Centuries. Series 2: Sixteenth century. Series 3: Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. The author advises students to "on no account forget to note the period as well as the country from which the object comes, as it is only by comparing one example with another that he learns how to discriminate the characteristics of the various styles." Examples of doors, chimney friezes, panels, drawers, coffers, cabinets, cupboards, wardrobes. Includes entire pieces as well as fragments. Beautiful carvings.
