Not illustrated. 1907 Excerpt: ...a pinnacle, a canopy, or a pediment. For carving in the round it is necessary to make a full-sized plan and elevation of the object about to be carved, whether it be a figure or a Gothic pinnacle. When all the necessary measurements are set out on, paper, these then can be transferred to the wood. To carve the pinnacle opposite, procure a piece of wood 3J in. square by 18 in. high. Set out on paper your plan, 3 in. square, and from this project the elevation 18 in. high (3). In carving a small detail like a pinnacle, a better idea is obtained of what is wanted by sketching the details of the elevation first. Lines can then be projected from these details on to the plan. Unless the student is accustomed to geometrical drawing, he may find some difficulty in understanding 3, p. 127. If all the dotted lines are followed from the plan to the elevation, and these are compared with 1 and 2, the student ought to be able to follow the method of work. The elevation is drawn from the pinnacle, showing one of the pointed sides of the gable, 1, p. 127. The sloping side of the gable is given in 2, p. 127. The differences in the two sides must be noted, and a second elevation must be made from the point e (3) downwards, as the student will require to know exactly where the wood has to be cut away. Poppy-head m Progressive Stages-I. in elevation, the plan is projected. It includes the section of the shaft at b, represented by the central shaded square. As the shaft descends so its size increases, and this is shown at C, which is also the level where the gable and shaft unite. The projection of the crockets slightly diminishes as the rows ascend. The first row below b is the square of the wood, 3! in.; the second row (4) is 3 in. square, and the top row or the finial...
