Not illustrated. 1904 Excerpt: ...and devote themselves to a life of religious meditation, let them put their whole heart into their task; let them be diligent and energetic; and if they are like the lotus, which, although it grows in the water, yet remains untouched by the water, if they struggle in life without cherishing envy or hatred, if they live in the world not a life of self, but a life of truth, then surely joy, peace, and bliss will dwell in their minds. Since it is impossible to escape the result of our deeds, let us practise good works. Let us inspect our thoughts that we do no evil, for as we sow so shall we reap.3 By oneself evil is done; by oneself one suffers; by oneself evil is left undone; by oneself one is purified. Purity and impuri'.y belong to oneself; no one can purify another.4 If a man hold himself dear, let him watch himself carefully; let each man direct himself first to what is proper, then let him teach others. Self is the lord of self; who else could be the lord? (Dhammapada.) Do not follow the evil law. Do not live on in thoughtlessness. Do not follow false doctrine. Be not a friend of the world. Rouse thyself; do not be idle. Follow the law of virtue. Do not follow that of sin He whose evil deeds are covered by good deeds brightens up this world like the moon when freed from clouds Beware of bodily anger, of the angar of the tongue, of the anger of the mind. Leave the sins of the mind and practise virtue with thy mind. (Ibid.) Make thyself an island; work hard; be wise. Let a wise man blow off the impurities of himself as a smith blows off the impurities of silver--one by one, little by little, and from time to time There is no fire like passion; there is no shark like hatred; there is no snare like folly; there is no torrent like greed.
