Emden wurde zu einem Sammelbecken religios Verfolgter und zum Fluchtpunkt einer intellektuellen Elite, die von hier aus Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der Reformation in anderen europaischen Landern nahm. Dies geschah nicht zuletzt durch den Druck und die Verbreitung andernorts verbotener Literatur. Die Stadt und ihre Kirche wurden deshalb als 'Moederkerk' (Mutterkirche) der niederlandischen Reformation bezeichnet. Am Ende verwandelte der sich hier durchsetzende Calvinismus Emden in einen quasiautonomen Stadtstaat.
