A refreshing, encouraging look at orthodoxy and theology!?
There are authors whose names are on my list of ?read without knowing anything about the content.? Joshua Harris is on this list.
After first reading ?I Kissed Dating Goodbye? and after recommending it in a bible study for young women because of the widely unpopular idea of ?walking in purity?, Joshua Harris? thoughts on biblical relationships had my attention.
In ?Dug Down Deep: Unearthing What I Believe and Why It Matters?, I again connected with the principles heralded in this book.
Embrace orthodoxy, what a thought? Consider your own theology, way too scary a thought. Not so wild a thought to see orthodoxy or theology as ?the study of God?, though.
Why would we as Christians not want to study God? Why do those two words cause us to recoil? Those who claim the name of Jesus Christ and consider themselves to be Christians, wouldn?t they want to know, to study, to discover all they can about the King and Creator they claim to follow? A resounding yes is the only answer.
Joshua Harris brings the thought that orthodoxy does matter. Your theology does matter. Doctrine and sound biblical truths do matter Why? Because it is the basis of from which you will walk out your days if you truly are a Christian.
This work is written in a conversational, testimonial way. The style is easy and understandable and rejects the idea that orthodoxy, theology, and doctrine are not meant for seminary only no more than the scrolls of the torah were written for the priests only.
Just reading over the chapters gives you an idea of the engaging approach to the study of ??awe-filled experience of truly knowing the living Jesus Christ.?
Some of the more interesting chapters for me were:
- My Rumspringa
?We are all theologians the question is whether what we know of God is true.?
- God with a Bellybutton
?Jesus is unique. And He came to accomplish something no one else could.?
- I Believe in the Holy Spirit
?I longed to know that God was present, that I was doing more than singing songs to the ceiling.?
- Humble Orthodoxy
?Here?s what deflates my arrogance faster than anything else; trying to live the truth I have.?
If you want a book that discusses the ?study of God?, then pick this one up ? you will not be disappointed. It is a good one to gift to a new Christian. Perhaps it will spark conversations and questions in which you both will need to search the scriptures to answer, which, of course, is the whole point.
I recommend this book highly.

Joshua Harris' new book, Dug Down Deep, is a personal story of how theology and doctrine have played important roles in his life and development as a pastor, husband, father, and a man of God. Pastor Harris' purpose in writing is "to share how I learned that orthodoxy isn't just for old men but is for anyone who longs to behold a God who is bigger and more real and glorious than the human mind can imagine" and he accomplishes this by reflecting on how orthodox theology and doctrine have shaped and influenced his life and how it continues.
Harris highlights elements of systematic theology and doctrine, such as "the nature of God, the inerrancy of the Bible, the divinity and humanity of Christ, sanctification, the church". Throughout these chapters he takes a personal and practical approach in how these doctrines have applied in his life.
This book is not an extensive or noted review in systematic theology, but a more personal account of how the doctrines have influenced one man's life. For those who are new to these doctrines and systematic theology, the book is a springboard into further study and application. For those who are familiar with these doctrines, the book calls for a return to "humble orthodoxy" and applying these doctrines to everyday living.
It is an insightful book into the making of a man and God's story played out in the life of one of His sons. It is inspiring and will challenge you to "dig down deep" into God Himself.
