In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir of her twenty years as a functioning alcoholic, Caroline Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it. "Presents just enough science and provides a wrenching inner look at what this disease and the recovery from it feels like".--"San Francisco Chronicle".

It is a dreadful waste that Caroline Knapp should have died so young, but she left a legacy of some truly remarkable books on difficult subjects that should help many, many people. 'Drinking' is one of them - her story of how, why, and when, she drank might sound theoretically self absorbed, but her honesty and humour could help many readers who see friends or partners - or themselves - drifting into excess. I found the book wonderfully readable and lacking in self pity. All praise to Ms. Knapp, who had a hard life, but at least it was a valuable one.
