Milam has created a very precise yet exhaustive review of research on alcoholism and has definitively presented not only the correct definition of the disease, but describes the continuing erroneous attempts to treat the disease by trying to address personality or mental problems or personal "weakness." This is an outstanding book in that it also provides concrete steps to treatment based on well-established ways to support the patient and their family/friends. Milam's *Under the Influence* should be required reading for everyone in the medical field, especially psychologists, but its greatest gift is clarifying the disease and its appropriate treatment for laypeople.
I've read this book (it's short) 3 times, and am buying copies for my family and friends!
