Norman Wisdom, the definitive little clown, had a sad childhood, with a mother who left the family house to go to another man at a time when Norman had just begun school. Left by their father for weeks on end, he and his brother were often reduced to stealing fruit from market stalls or going hungry, the latter more often being the case. It's not hard to see that this sad beginning was the impetus for a successful stage, TV, pantomime and film career as a clown who even the great Charlie Chaplin remarked would be worthy of filling his shoes.
The street urchin never left Wisdom's persona. He bluffed his way into the great Ed Sullivan's apartment and auditioned in the foyer, and horror! he inadvertently caused a waterfall over elegant guests during a Royal occasion, causing the Queen Mother to call him 'a little tinker'. Being no taller than five feet, and dressed in a suit too small with a barrow boy's cap set back on his head, he was the master of the pratfall, the best in the business, tripping and sliding over and under pianos, twirling and dancing in the clown's too confident moments, and shy and twisted as the unsuccessful idiot. Jerry Lewis, John Wayne, Bob Hope, Laurel and Hardy, Cary Grant, those grand names, crammed into his dressing room after a show.
His story is often 'open-mouthed' time for the reader, being one of struggle against the jealousies of often bigger names on the same bill, and sometimes even downright sabotage. His private life was one of pathos, having two wives leave him for other men. He doesn't dwell on this, giving them merely a paragraph or two, and this is a weakness in the book. But it's well worth reading because of the wonderful and often funny anecdotes, and because there will never be another quite like him.
