This seems to be a very, very candid autobiography. Or is it? While Rupert Everett is not shy in telling unpleasant truths about himself (a couple of instances of petty larceny in his teenage years and betrayal of friends), there's not an overabundance of everyday emotions. He slips and slides in almost precis fashion through brittle, glittering parties, through gay lovers and co-stars. Page 332 is an example describing a meeting between Julia Roberts and Madonna : ' "Hi, I'm Julia" said Julia with a huge smile. "I know who you are" said Madonna icily. It was the only good moment of the evening.'
Born, if not with a silver spoon in his mouth then certainly a silver-plated one, Everett's world was of private schools, a year at the Alliance Francaise in Paris (he attended just once) and a definite slide towards the
hedonistic lifestyle. Interwoven throughout are the acting jobs. His friends include starry names: Ian McClelland, director Tony Richardson, Roddy McDowall, Gianni Versace.
He writes openly of his homosexuality and some of the best parts in the book are the descriptions of life where plates and eating utensils are washed separately and where death stalks with the onset of HIV. He worries that he might succumb. His real love seems to be his dog Mo, and Mo's demise is recounted very tenderly indeed.
Everett shows, at certain times , that he can be sensitive and observant and even moved particularly when describing some place or scene, but throughout there is a subtle whiff of unease and defiance, brought out in the almost adolescent use of the gay scene slang. But an interesting book.

I'd rather eat a banana skin, than read this again
Very boring book. His stories have no ending, they just seem to drag on and on. I thought it would be a book full of heaps of dirt on his many costars. But, no! What you read about is his detest for his mother and so on and so on!
