The hundred years after Augustine of Hippo's death was crucial for the doctrine of grace in the Western church. Alternating waves of enthusiasm for Augustine's teaching and objections to its more extreme positions gradually began to shape an interpretation of Augustine that was to become Augustinianism. Weaver carefully traces the course of this controversy from the last years of Augustine's life to the Council of Orange in 529.

Seller's Description:
New. Semi-Pelagianism was an attempt among theologians in the fourth and fifth centuries to mediate between doctrines of the sovereignty of grace and predestination in Augustine and the freedom of the will in Pelagius. While not denying the necessity of grace for salvation, theologians like John Cassian, influenced by eastern monasticism, maintained that the first steps in the life of faith were taken by the human will and that grace intervened subsequently. Rebecca Weaver exhaustively examines the social context of monasticism versus a congregational, lay emphasis as a means to understand this movement. Rejected by the Council of Orange in 529, she argues that Semi-Pelagianism's influence continued to be profound up through the controversies with Molinists and Jansenists in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
