Tribal Fusion Bellydance star Ariellah merges three essential components of bellydance training in order to help the viewer build a solid foundation for dance and build precisely the kind of strength needed to keep the body moving fluidly. After offering a flexibility and strength-improving physical conditioning regimen consisting of a short yoga warm-up, a full yoga warm-up, and a yoga cool-down, Ariellah moves on to offer over an hour of basic and advanced-level bellydance technique drills designed to improve muscle control and allow for more precise movements. Lastly, Ariellah breaks six contemporary bellydance sequences down in a step-by-step segment that pays special attention to multiple movements and transitions. Three additional Tribal Fusion/Gothic bellydance performance pieces offer a look at just how these sequences can be used to create personalized sequences that will be as exhilarating for the dancer as they are delightful for the audience. Don't let Ariellah's striking make up and costume scare you: when teaching on this DVD she is freshly scrubbed, warm, and clear. To be honest, this DVD is so packed with material that I haven't even made it all the way through yet. She has choices of short or full yoga warmups, and since I am a yoga novice I use the short. She then launches into drills, drills, drills. My muscle control has grown by leaps and bounds since following Ariellah's well thought out and well assembled DVD. She is remarkably good at intuiting where her students are beginning to slip, and seems to make a clarifying comment about proper form or simple encouragement just when I need it. This is a "small muscle" workout, by which I mean that individual muscles that you might never have thought about, such as the center of the back, or the front of the shoulder, will become tired with relentless isolation, but this is not a gym workout to make you sweat. She leads her drills on a bare stage, wearing black clothing, and it's quite easy to tell exactly what moves she is doing against the background of the set. She leads movements slowly, giving the novice time to learn the movement, before bringing it up to drilling speed. Her program is designed to guide the user into utilizing all the proper muscles for any given movement, rather than allowing lazy technique that approximates the appearance of belly dance. The music is very much along the lines of "Enigma," with techno and chant elements. I enjoy this music, even if I would rarely seek it out in life, but I know that some people find it distracting. I appreciate it as a fun change from my usual music. There is also combinations practice, which she elucidates clearly and intelligently, but while I have watched this segment, I have not attempted it, partly because I don't have the room and partly because I'm always a little tired and just a teensy bit shaky by the time I'm done with the drills and have to evaluate: combinations practice, or a sandwich? So far the sandwich has always won, but one day I look forward to testing myself with Ariellah's combinations. As a bonus, there are three absolutely mesmerizing dance performances that illustrate Tribal Fusion as Ariellah practices it. The beautiful thing about belly dance is how many forms it can take, even within the one heading of "American Tribal Style." Watching these performances makes me wish I could take lessons in person from this amazing dancer.
