Seller's Description:
Near Fine. No dust jacket as issued. First edition, first and only printing. Hardcover. Blue (Vol. 1) and gray (Vol. 2) paper-covered boards quarter-bound in blue cloth, with title blind-stamped on spine, in a printed cardboard slipcase, no dust jacket as issued. Installation by Christian Boltanski. Text by José Miguel G. Cortés (in Catalan, English and Spanish). Designed by Manuel Granell. Volume One is 84 pp., with many black and white plates and reference illustrations. Volume One (unpaginated) includes an English translation of the Cortés essay on Boltanski's installation. Volume Two (unpaginated) includes 186 black and white reproductions and a checklist of the exhibition. Both volumes printed by La Imprenta comunicación gráfica. 10-1/4 x 7-1/8 inches in slipcase. Published on the occasion of the 1998 exhibition Compra-Venta, organized by José Miguel G. Cortés at the Almodí in Valencià. Out of print. Very scarce. Near Fine (slight soiling to front cover of Volume 2) in Near Fine slipcase (some wear to corners). Boltanski's obsession with the collected goods, or evidence of a life lived--photographs, brooms, chairs--has produced an environment where those objects not only mark the passage of time but also become exchangeable and salable. From the publisher: "The exhibition conceived and carried out site specifically by Christian Boltanski for the city of Valencià, creates an intimate relationship between these central ideas that control his work and the specific characteristics of the venue for which it has been designed. the exhibition has been baptized Compra-Venta (Buy and Sell) and is made up of a large number of private and personal objects (furniture, lamps, toys...) that many people from the city and the surrounding area are interested in selling. These objects have been collected, stored and distributed by the artist himself in the venue of the Almudin to be viewed for possible acquisition by anybody who is interested...As the available articles are sold they will be covered by a white sheet to denote that they are no longer for sale. They will be partially or totally covered form view and should all the articles be sold eventually, we would be faced with the sight of a room completely covered in white sheets like a mortuary full of stored corpses."
