Essential for the Watercolor Artist

Few men have had such an impact on 20th Century watercolor painting as has Edgar Whitney. Many of today's leading watercolor artists and teachers studied in Whitney's classes or workshops.

Opinionated, salty, bold--Whitney bullied his students into making solid and lovely paintings. His insistence on the basic tools and elements of design was delivered in such a way that you cannot forget them. And sometimes, in spite of talent, art, and knowledge, even Whitney would create a "stinker."

If you are a watercolorist and do not own this book, you are in for a real treat.

The Great Edgar Whitney

This book was like going home for me because Whitney taught at my former art school, Pratt Insitute and because he inspired two of my favorite watercolor painters: Mel Stabin and Frank Webb. I learned a ton from the book and had bunches of my questions answered. It is far more than a "how-to" on technique although there is plenty of that kind of information; he talks about what makes a fine painting in terms of the artist's satisfaction and the viewer's pleasure and understanding.
