Dan Curtis' tv movie adaptation was an improvement
It's an okay book. It isn't bad, but the pace is too slow for the suspense. So it can be a clunky read at different points along the way, sometimes genuinely boring. The premise is solid, and the story structure works. It's just too long, and by that I mean there's just too much of what feels not necessarily like padding but like Marasco was trying too hard. I liked the characters and the house. The house was really spooky, way more than that Amityville, rather akin to the Richard Matheson's Belasco House, though not a copy. The house in this novel is distinct. While I liked the characters, I can't say I was always that interested in them, if that makes sense. -- Again, it's not a bad book. It's just not all that good. The tv movie's better... and shorter, which is what I think the novel needed to be.
