I recently read this book about Leonard Cheshire and his rise through the ranks of the RAF as a bomber pilot. My first impressions were this book reads like 'Reach for the Sky', the Bader biography by Paul Brickhill. The difference is, Cheshire seems to come across as a very insightful and near-philosophical person -- even in the early '40s when this material was gathered for its 1943 publishing debut. That alone makes this book very curious indeed. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. If you are into RAF 'details' about air frames and the like, you will be disappointed, as Cheshire doesn't delve into that very much -- if at all. You will never find out what the serial number is for the Halifax Mk I that he flew most of the time, for example. The book is short, is an easy read, and a delight for the subject (and the times). Have a go -- you could read it on a weekend, if left to your own devices.
