This book examines the roots of and responses to women's mysticism in Golden Age Spain. The Church, Haliczer shows, was welcoming but wary, and the Inquisition sought to winnow out women guilty of "feigned sanctity." Through examining court cases, as well as biographies and autobiographies, Haliczer concludes that mysticism offered women a way to transcend the control of the male-dominated Church.
