This was my first time reading one of the books from the Best American Essays and I was fairly pleased by a majority of the essays. A large percentage were well crafted and poignant. I particularly liked "In Defense of the Book" by William H. Gass and "Gray Area: Thinking with a Damaged Brain" by Floyd Skloot.
I consider the best essays to be in the middle and towards the end of the book.. Some of the writings had similar themes which did not bother me too much, but to some it might become redundant.
This book is definitely worth taking the time to read and I hope that you will be able to experience the sensitivity of the words as I have.
