Avakian allows his communist sentiments concerning politics and social issues to intrude in what could have been a better book without them. It is almost as if he were saying, 'You can't be a good atheist unless you embrace communism.' Nothing could be further from the truth. Although he hits the right chords when dealing with religious fascism, Chris Hedges did it better in 'American Fascists.' Also, while I admire the editors' honesty in pointing out that this book comes from speeches Avakian has given to friendly audiences, the occasional notations (laughter) unnecesarily reminds of thatr fact, and we are reading him, not listening. Frankly, I set the book down halfway through.. There are so many books on atheism around, I felt I was wasting my time.
