Happened upon one of this series by Nancy Atherton and was immediately drawn in. Had to find them all as to read them in order. A little bit of supernatural (the kind we all wish really were true - communication with someone we love who has died), a little history, a touch of Cinderella (happily ever after), and some very practical advice that we could all incorporate into our own lives. A wonderful way to spend the afternoon or a bedtime read.

A grand beginning to an excellent series
This, the first volume of Atherton's series featuring "Aunt Dimity" and her "courtesy niece," Laurie, provides the background necessary for the enjoyment of the multiple sequels, which have been arriving regularly at intervals of about a year since this first one was published. In it we meet the essential character whose wisdom pervades the entire series. Aunt Dimity, surprisingly enough, is already dead, but her spirit communicates with Laurie by means of a blue-backed journal, in which writing appears. Every "Aunt Dimity" book contains a recipe for a sweet treat, and most, if not all, contain stuffed toys of significance. Perhaps the most notable feature of this series, however, is that, while each book revolves around a mystery, there is very little violence and a remarkable absence of murder. The Aunt Dimity books are delightful whimsy and amongst the best "dessert reading" available. Test the waters with this pilot volume and you will find escape from the cares of the everyday world without a loss of sympathy for the human condition. Laurie begins the book jobless, broke, and almost homeless, having just had her apartment ransacked. She ends the book solvent and happy. To discover how the transition is made and how Aunt Dimity effects and affects it -- read the book!
