George Grote (1794--1871), was a well-known historian of Greece and parliamentarian. His long-awaited Aristotle (1872) was the result of many years of study, following the publication of his masterpieces The History of Greece (1846--56) and Plato and the Other Companions of Sokrates (1865, 3 vols.). At the time of writing, such a comprehensive account of the subject had never before been attempted and Aristotle remains one of the most important contributions to the history of ancient thought. Grote's biographer, M. L. Clarke, said that this work was a 'testimony to Grote's intellectual vitality and his undeviating pursuit of his chosen course', and the study won much praise from his contemporaries. Grote's Aristotle was to remain unfinished at his death, and the first edition was published under the editorship of Alexander Bain and G. Croom Robertson a year later. The second edition, reprinted here in two volumes, was published in 1880 with the addition of two important essays on the Ethics and the Politics of Aristotle, the material for which was discovered among Grote's papers. To the chapters on the life of Aristotle, the Aristotelian canon and a critical study of the logical treatises, the editors added a section on De Anima , originally published in Bain's Senses and Intellect (1868). The Appendix contains four papers reprinted from Bain's Mental and Moral Science (1868). These writings were collated by the editors from Grote's notes and references. This scarce work has the added benefit of extensive footnotes, appendices and a carefully collated index. To any scholar of ancient philosophy and thought, this reprint of one of the most important and rare nineteenth-century texts on Aristotle will be a valuable resource.
