I am an Appalachian Trail section hiker and look for almost any book on the A.T. and will read them through even if boring. This was one such book. Don't get me wrong, parts were interesting and well done, but too much was tedious renditions of "got up, started hiking at 8:00, it rained, there were rocks and roots, hiked x miles, got to camp at 5:00" kind of diary writing. If that's not your thing, you might gag before you finish this book.
Good Appalachian Trail hiking books are about the people, the trail, the towns, without so much about the miles. Good AT books actually skip many of the same ol, same ol miles. Since the author section hiked, I suppose he didn't have the opportunities to learn more about other folks on the trail, and thus couldn't write much about people, especially after his brother passed on and no longer hiked with him.
Anyway, if you are an AT devotee and AT book collector, and don't have one by a section hiker, this one will be fine. It just won't be the first one you snatch off your shelf to show a friend.
