In this poetic, sensitive memoir, M.F.K. Fisher traces her life from birth through childhood into adulthood through memories of her loving family and their lives as outsiders in the Quaker community of Whittier, California. Recalling the people, passions, sounds, and scents of her childhood, with its kindnesses and quiet cruelties, Fisher also portrays her developing interests in literature, food, and cooking. MFK Fisher writes about what she knows best: people, family, community and food. Her memoir brings out not only what her life was like, but also describes life in the US early in the 20th century -- That French Fries were called "Freedom Fries" -- now where have we heard that before -- bigotry, racism, and the separation of the classes that was the way of life at the time. She writes, too, about the Quakers who founded Whittier, CA, and their relationship to the outsiders -- the Fishers -- at the time. Buy it for a look to our not-so-long- ago past that also looks uncomfortably like our present.
