America's Wild Woodlands is one of many books published by the Special Publications Division of the National Geographic Society. This book is a description of the many forests located in the United States and Canada, their ecology, and the conservation measures being taken to preserve these wild woodlands.
The book opens with a portrayal of the mixed deciduous/evergreen forests of the Northeast. The Eastern deciduous forests of the Ozarks and the Southern Appalachians are emphasized in Chapter Two. Chapter Three features the forests of the Southeast (bald cypresses and loblolly pines are two of many trees mentioned in this chapter). The mountain forests of the Rockies (and quaking aspens) are described in Chapter Four. The fifth and final chapter depicts the forests of the West coast and presents the biggest, tallest, and oldest known trees: the sequoias, redwoods, and bristlecone pines, respectively. Each chapter is supplemented with stunning photographs. There are also color paintings of the leaves/needles and buds/cones of twenty well-known American trees spaced throughout the narrative.
I did like this book a great deal, but I would have liked a map to accompany each chapter (there is a map of North American forests in the opening of the book). Nevertheless, America's Wild Woodlands is a great book for nature lovers, conservationists, or anyone wanting to know more about America's forests and their ecology.
