I have looked widely for a text appropriate for my high school students studying US Catholic history. I can not find a better text. It is short but mentions so much that it can be a jumping-off point for many other avenues of study. If someone wants to know with whom to start a search this text mentions all the important players. It has a great bibliography and index. I really appreciate the countless images as well. Well worth a researcher's time.

Relentlessly PC
Although Crews is an accomplished writer and he orders his material in a comprehensive manner, the chief problem with this book is it's unrelenting desire to kow-tow to political correctness. The author spends more ink and space apologising for the Catholic church than actually recounting it's historical deeds. In this reviewers' opinion, it would have been better for the author to present 'just the facts ma'am' and allow the reader to make political judgments concerning the events of history, especially concerning the life of the early missionaries to the continent. However, there is still much to recomend this book, for there are few histories of this wide-ranging subject, and if the reader can persevere beyond the first few PC chapters, the book has a great deal of interesting information.
