Goes Canal.--About a mile S.S.E. of the buoy is the entrance to the Goes Canal (262) leading from the East Schelde to the town of Goes. It is about 4 98 k. m. long, about 22 m. wide, and has a depth of 25 d. m. There is a swing bridge at Wilhelminadorp (about half-way) and another at Goes: least width of opening, 7-5 m. The lock known as the Goesche Sas is 52 m. long, 9 m. wide, and 30-7 d. m. deep. There are quays at Goes. Goes, the capital of South Beveland, is worth visiting for the sake of its old church, castle, and town-hall, and the quaint costumes of its women. South Beveland Canal (261).--About 3 miles S.E. of the entrance to the Goes Canal lies Wemeldinge, near which is the entrance to the South Beveland Canal, connecting the East with the West Schelde. It is about 775 k. m. long, 42 to 47-75 m. wide, and the least depth of water is 65 d. m. There are two locks at each end, viz. at Wemeldinge on the East Schelde, and at Hansweert on the West Schelde: the larger of each pair is 119 m. long with a width of 16 m.: the smaller is 112 m. long and 86 m. wide. It is crossed by four swing bridges with a least opening of 13-5 m. At the entrance harbour of Hansweert there is a rise and fall of 1-97 m. above and 2-25 m. below the mean level at Amsterdam. At the entrance harbour at Wemeldinge the rise and fall are respectively 1-5 and 177 m. The general level of the canal is 0-26 m. above the Amsterdam level. The tow-path is on the west side.
