Not illustrated. 1896 Excerpt: ...at 15: --The ready solubility of ammonia in water may be demonstrated by placing a vessel filled with the gas over the liquid; the water will be forcibly driven into the vessel, owing to the rapidity of the absorption (fig. 73). Solution of ammonia has the power of dissolving many salts and oxides which are insoluble in water--e.g., the oxides of copper, silver, zinc, etc., the chloride and phosphate of silver, etc. The solution has a pungent odour and a strong alkaline reaction (whence the name alkaline air originally given to the gas by Priestley): it turns reddened litmus paper blue, and renders yellow tumeric paper brown. These colours disappear after a time when the papers are exposed to the air, owing to the dissipation of the ammonia. Ammonia is a non-supporter of combustion and of respiration: animals die when immersed in the gas. It is feebly combustible: if a stream of oxygen be mixed with ammonia, evolved from a strong aqueous solution in the manner represented in fig. 74, the ammonia will burn with a greenish-yellow flame, if ignited at the mouth of the flask With excess of ammonia, when it forms water, nitrogen, and hydrogen, the flame is luminous and round: with excess of oxygen it is pointed and less luminous; in this case ammonium nitrite is apt to be formed in addition to nitrogen and water. This flame is sufficiently hot to melt platinum and render lime incandescent. Ammonia gas may be condensed to a liquid by cooling it to-40 by means of a mixture of calcium chloride and snow. It may more readily be obtained in the liquid condition by taking advantage of the property possessed by certain metallic chlorides of absorbing large quantities of ammonia, and of again liberating the gas at a gentle heat. One-half of a strong A-shaped glass tube is..
