Excerpt from A Reply to the Review of Dr. Wyatt's Sermon and Mr. Sparks's Letters on the Protestant Episcopal Church: Which Originally Appeared in the Christian Disciple at Boston, and Subsequently, in a Separate Form at Baltimore, in Which It Is Attempted to Vindicate the Church From the Charges of That Review It is evident unto all men, diligently reading Holy Scripture, and ancient authors, says the preface to the ordinal of the church, that, from the apostles' times, there have been these officers in Christ' s church bishops, priests, and deacons The first, or superior order, were intrusted with the government of the church, and with the power of ordaining or admitting men to the inferior orders. The second order, deriving their power through the hands of Bishops, were empowered to preach the gospel, and administer the sacraments of the church. The third order, we're general assistants in the service of the church, and charged with the care of sick and poor people. These three orders are known in scripture, by the names, first of apostles.
