I read this to my preschool class. It was a little long for the 3 year old class, but the older kids loved it.

And this is the snail with an itchy foot...
This is a wonderful picture book. I have read it with nursery children and various primary school classes up to about age 8.
The book is great to read to 3 - 6 year olds and it is a wonderful book for 6 - 8 year olds to read to others. The rhyme gives the book a fantastic rhythm which allows the story to flow beautifully, captivating the imaginations of the children who listen.
Scheffler's illustrations are colourful and detailed. There is some environmental print and many different items for the children to notice. The book also shows various different natural environments which can be discussed with them.
Although the whale is huge and the little snail is tiny by comparisson, the snail saves the day. The moral being that it doesn't matter who you are, you have the power to make a difference and to perform great kindnesses to others.
I would recomend this book to anyone who has young children or works with them.
