Really, you need to have read the original Scarlet Pimpernel book if you wish to enjoy this one. In the original we meet the gallant Englishman, known only as the Scarlet Pimpernel, and his trusty band of rich, bored young gentlemen. All of them are, of course, freedom loving aristocrats. Any time not spent attending balls with the Prince of Wales or running their vast estates is spent rescuing French aristocrats from the guillotine. This book is a collection of stories about their daring escapes.
Unlike the original book, these stories are told from different perspectives, often of the desperate persecuted French. While this gives it a much different feel, seeing inside their minds is sometimes fascinating. After you've read several of these stories you can often guess how they will end, unfortunately. But then this is simply a fun read, and nothing more.
