Book as new and unread although with some wear-contents pages in excellent clean condition with some faint yellowing around edges, glossy card cover has fading on and around spine and creasing at top front RH corner. 'In 1982 the Archive of 20th Century British Art at the Tate Gallery acquired 122 artists' portraits from John Gainsborough, who had inherited this collection from his father Richard Gainsborough, the founder of magazine Art News & Review. Gainsborough's first editor, Bernard Denver, conceived the idea of inviting living artists to create self-portraits for the front page of the magazine with an accompanying article often on the on the occasion of an exhibition. The collection published in this book is rather more than one third of the total number of contemporary portraits published by Art News & Review. ' From the introduction by Nicholas Serota.
