Seller's Description:
Very Good in Very Good jacket. 8vo. xiv, 276pp, index, bibliography, notes, appendices, bw ills. or boards in jacket. Tiny chip at base of jacket spine, otherwise near new. The US Navy Africa Squadron was formed in 1842 to enforce the ban on the importation of slaves. Over 20 years they proved ineffective. Duty in the squadron was unpopular. The climate, departmental neglect and judicial indifference, which alowed intercepted slave vessels to return to the trade, all contributed to the sailors' frustration. The author looks at how this unit earned its poor reputation and whether it is deserved.
