Another Winner from Jo Goodman
To summarize this story in four words: Go get a copy! The banter is sublime, the characters are delightful and there's a mystery afoot. This story unwinds or unfurls; it does not rush around. This book definitely goes in my keeper stack.
Quill McKenna has been hired to protect the powerful mine owner (who has received threats and had ?accidents?), Ramsay Stonechurch. Now it looks like his daughter Ann could be a victim too. Quill suggests a female bounty hunter, Calico Nash, to help protect Ann, while acting as her tutor.
The author brings the name Annie Oakley into the book to remind readers that such a character was possible. Quill and Calico are two absolutely delightful people. As the author shares pieces of their back story, it doesn't take long for the reader to understand they were meant to be.
The Stonechurch family is avoiding pot shots while the mines are experiencing troubles (weeping nitroglycerin and production problems). Ramsay Stonechurch is falling for Calico while Ann is smitten with an unknown male. Together, Quill and Calico stay one jump ahead of the trouble swirling around the town, mines and Stonechurches. A great book!
