Excerpt from Immensee At Husum, in the old duchy of Schleswig, Theodor Storm was born in 1817. In 1888 he was laid away at Hademarschen in the duchy of Holstein. A North Frisian by birth, he displays all the best characteristics of his race. Ever changing, yet ever the same, the Frisian resembles the restless waves of the northern seas which threaten the shores of his beloved land. In the struggle with the elements he has learned to main tain his outward composure, his strength has grown, fear he does not know, sentiment and passion are locked up, as it were, in an impervious shell. Yet as lightning cleaving the clouds betrays the sky beyond, there are times when he shows his innermost nature. Utmost strength is strangely united with endearing sweetness; apparent coldness is merely the disguise of a sympathetic heart. Unvarying success does not allow him to yield to reckless defiance, and repeated defeat is only an incentive to renewed effort. There are but a few facts of Storm's life with which we need here concern ourselves. He was reared in comfortable circumstances, and was most fortunate in his natural inheritance, for with Goethe he could say.
