The White Company is a historical adventure novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle. The story takes place during the 14th century in England and France, and follows the adventures of a young archer named Alleyne Edricson. Alleyne is a member of the White Company, a band of mercenaries who have been hired by the French to fight against the English. As the story unfolds, Alleyne and his companions find themselves caught up in a series of battles and skirmishes, as they fight to protect their French employers and gain glory and riches for themselves. Along the way, Alleyne meets a number of colorful characters, including the charismatic Sir Nigel Loring and the beautiful Lady Maude. As the White Company marches through France, they encounter a variety of challenges and obstacles, including treacherous terrain, harsh weather conditions, and fierce enemy soldiers. Despite these difficulties, Alleyne and his comrades remain steadfast in their mission, fighting bravely and earning the respect of their fellow soldiers.Throughout the novel, Conan Doyle paints a vivid picture of medieval life, with its chivalry, honor, and violence. He also explores themes of loyalty, bravery, and the nature of war, making The White Company a thought-provoking and engaging read for fans of historical fiction and adventure stories. As he raised himself to look over the bracken at his enemies, the staring color caught the eye of the bailiff, who broke into a long screeching whoop and spurred forward sword in hand. Seeing himself discovered, the man rushed out from his hiding-place, and bounded at the top of his speed down the line of archers, keeping a good hundred paces to the front of them. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Beautifully bound and illustrated, Doyle immersed himself in archaic English and French and delivers in this fascinating adventure about one of the Crusades. I must add that what he delivers is a bit of a muddle for 21st Century readers -- so many names of official positions in Middle English and French -- the names of foods, places, past-times -- though they lend tremendous flavor to the narrative, are maddening in that they require continual sorting out, or looking up in the dictionary or online. Still, the heroes journey has a sweep that is irresistible.

Great book!
One of my new all-time favorites! I wasn't sure if I would like it, but as a medieval history major, I love historical fiction and non-fiction. VERY entertaining and witty. Some of Sir Nigel's dialogue had me laughing out loud.
