This fully updated Ninth Edition of Steven and Susan Zumdahl's CHEMISTRY brings together the solid pedagogy, easy-to-use media, and interactive exercises that today's instructors need for their general chemistry course. Rather than focusing on rote memorization, CHEMISTRY uses a thoughtful approach built on problem-solving. For the Ninth Edition, the authors have added a new emphasis on critical systematic problem solving, new critical thinking questions, and new computer-based interactive examples to help students learn how to approach and solve chemical problems--to learn to think like chemists--so that they can apply the process of problem solving to all aspects of their lives. Students are provided with the tools to become critical thinkers: to ask questions, to apply rules and develop models, and to evaluate the outcome. In addition, Steven and Susan Zumdahl crafted ChemWork, an online program included in OWL Online Web Learning to support their approach, much as an instructor would offer support during office hours. ChemWork is just one of many study aids available with CHEMISTRY that supports the hallmarks of the textbook--a strong emphasis on models, real world applications, visual learning, and independent problem solving. Book arrived very quickly after I ordered it and it was in exactly the condition as described. I would feel very confident buying from this seller again.

One of the most frequently used books in Chemistry
note: the other reviews below me rate this book according to their own level of knowledge, this however has nothing to do with this book at all, this book was intended for use in the first and sometimes second year, depending on the students field of study ( major or minor for example, makes a difference in what is used from the book and in what timespan this is to be learned)
Title: One of the most frequently used books in Chemistry courses, ever.
In reviewing this book, first I take a look at the index.
The index contains four rows of approximately fourty entries,
Say onehondredandfifty entries a page on eighteen pages,
so this is about twothousandsevenhundred entries.
The entries are good for finding anything that is sensible.
A student wouldn?t really have to spend a lot of time to find
What is needed, if the term or a related term is known.
The appendices are extensive, in such a manner, it will not really be necessary
to spend time on looking up something to complete work or get a full understanding on
what is given in the book.
The author has been teaching Chemistry for many years
and has a very good understanding on what makes a student efficient and succesfull,
this can be seen by how the book is constructed.
Apart from this, I must say, if one is unexperienced and hasn?t already completed a first year
Chemistry book, I would highly recommend adding the study guide by Paul B. Kelter
that is part of the print supplements for this book. It isn?t very expensive, so one should also, if possible , buy this because it really makes you a good student, a lot of study techniques are given.
In addition, don?t forget to buy the student solution manual to learn how to give more proper answers when just the answer / multiple choice is not enough. Also , you can learn how to find answers better making you more fast in finding the correct data / making notes to find answers,
without having to search too much, it is necessary to be able work with this book without
the need to interrupt making your notes and answers because ?it cannot be found how to give this certain answer?. By looking at the solution manual it can be discovered and trained how to prevent this sort of time loss that will often make students get behind on schedule in the first year.
Often students fluke in the first year because of clumpsy study methods and the lack of time left to complete the course work and attain a sort of level of skill that is somewhat or more ?sufficient?.
This of course is often the case in year one and two books, but I find these two , the study guide and the student solution manuals , of exceptional good quality, somewhat in the same manner as the book set ?University Physics with mastering Physics? that comes with a study guide and solution manual also, although separate.
If one would give answers directly by viewing the questions and then, without having a look in the book or looking up information at all, like a professor would, then you would get the point.
The answers would be complete an thorough. Learning how to do this would be nice, of course one could just study all the information given, but the method of learning how to give this is also required, and if the information is not present at this scale / level, then one would still have to be able to understand how to look for this information, where to find, what is usefull etcetera.
This is often the case with first year students, after having spend time on highschool they enter a course, but they aren?t really used to serious work yet, and trying to find ?shortcuts? is no longer really possible, or effective so to say.
However, apart from mediocre preparation or not being prepared for higher studies , also if slight,
The way Chemistry is tought here , especially with these two books that accompany this book,
will make you really good, also in making a report or writing a piece of work, learning how to become more proficient in studying this subject is really enhanced, compared to other books, even though most universities would automatically select the best books for their students, this book is really good, used by a lot of universities also, as you could have guessed maybe.
This book is usually being used in general Chemistry courses, different from for instance biochemistry or molecular chemistry, but I could imagine this book would still be part of the course.
The book has more than onethousand pages, topics discussed include:
Chemical foundations ( really good to make you start )
Types of chemical reactions
Gases
Thermochemistry
Chemical kinetics
Chemical equilibrium ( see Solving equilibrium problems also)
Acids and bases
Electrochemistry
Organic and Biological molecules
a lot of other topics ( look at the contents and index on the internet )
In the book you can find information on all the topics common to the first years course in general chemistry. There are illustrations and examples and example exercises to build up slightly.
It is fun to read and the information is good. Even though it is a lot of information given in this big book of more than onethousand pages, you could say it is probably hard to not to get a pass on your exams if you made all the exercises and studied the reviews and important terms.
So , yeah, very good quality, very extensive, the accompanied books will make you very proficient,
Takes a lot of time, but there is no real shortcut , so if you do this, it will be difficult to fail for your first year course in chemistry I?d say.
The other editions are good also, of course since the first edition there have been many alterations,
I don't think it really makes much of a difference since the 3rd edition, they're all good ( but I didn't read them, so if you find anything don't blame me, sometimes there is a subject ommitted or added in a university book that isn't always appreciated, but hey, it happens right? this wouldn't be the only book you're ever going to read, so it is okay I think, also, this would probably take maybe twentythousand pages extra but most people don't know this ) Here, that's it , I've spend more than half an hour, I'm finished. Good luck with your study!
