Signed by Richard Sale on title page and by summiter Fritz Wintersteller, liason officer Qader Saeed, and Reinhold Schmuck (son of expedition leader Marcus Schmuck) fine Account of the first ascent of Broad Peak (without supplemental oxygen) by Marcus Schmuck and Fritz Wintersteller, followed by Hermann Buhl and Kurt Diemberger. Based on the diaries of Scmuck and Wintersteller, translated from the German by Michaela Gigerl and John Hirst, with additional unpublished material from Hermann Buhl, and the recollections of Diemberger and Qader Saeed, the Pakastani liason officer. Appendix of all summit climbs from 1957-2004 at end. Buhl was lost two and a half weeks later after an unsuccessful attempt on Chogolisa peak with Kurt Diemberger, when a cornice broke while descending along the S.E. Ridge.
