Seller's Description:
Very Good. 8vo-over 7¾-9¾" tall. pp. 52. Very good clean condition, hard cover with full-colour image of Lyme Regis in 1539, is slightly faded around the spine. Contents clean and unmarked. Black and white photos throughout. A history of this town by the novelist who made it internationally famous in his novel 'The French Lieutenant's Woman', although Jane Austen's fans already knew it from 'Persuasion'. Once a major English medieval port, trading wood for wine and blessed by royal charter, its fortunes rose and fell. Later it was the place that saw the launching of the Duke of Monmouth's rebellion of 1685, and later still the site of an endlessly rich supply of prehistoric fossils. A stimulating and fascinating historical account.
