Seller's Description:
Fine in Fine jacket. Size: 24 cm.; Dust jacket condition: Fine. When war broke out in 1939 the Port of London found itself under siege. Vessels using the waterway serving what was then the world? s greatest port had to run the gauntlet of attack from the air and the sea, and some were sunk by mines laid by marauding aircraft not only in the estuary but far upriver and even in the docks themselves. Then came the aerial onslaught on the port itself which began on 7th September, 1940, and continued for fifty-seven consecutive nights, the most searching test the Port of London had ever had to endure in its long history. L. M. Bates, who himself served the Port of London in peace and war, shows how the port and its associated industries not only survived but contributed in full to the war effort. Damaged ships were repaired, cargoes of Lend-Lease materials from America were unloaded and distributed, and Allied forces were dispatched to the D-Day landings; watermen, dockers, shipyard workers and members of the emergency services and the armed forces along the river all played their part to the full. 189 pages. World War, 1939-1945--Campaigns--England--London, World War, 1939-1945--Aerial operations, German, London (England)--History--Bombardment, 1940-1941.
