Addressed to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. On letterhead of "The Ulysses S. Grant Association, " the world's long-time leading Grant scholar (1933-2008) chats with his friend about a book about to be published: "I am just delighted to learn about the imminent publication of your book. Judging from our correspondence, you have certainly worked long and hard, and I hope the satisfaction of completion provide more than ample compensation...." Signed simply "John" in black ballpoint.
