Seller's Description:
Good. [8], 566, [2] pages. Includes Prologue. Crease on front and back covers. Douglas Niles (born December 1, 1954, in Brookfield, Wisconsin) is a fantasy author and game designer. Niles was one of the creators of the Dragonlance world and the author of the first three Forgotten Realms novels, and the Top Secret S/I espionage role-playing game. Niles has written two World War II alternate history novels, Fox on the Rhine and Fox at the Front (co-authored with Michael Dobson). Released in hardcover by Forge, a division of TOR, "Fox" has been both a main selection of the Military Book Club and a Featured selection of the Science Fiction Book Club. Niles and Dobson also later wrote the World War II alternate history novel MacArthur's War. Michael S. Dobson (born September 9, 1952 in Charlotte, North Carolina) is an American author in the fields of alternate history novels (relating to WWII) and role-playing game adventures (D&D, Indiana Jones, and Buck Rogers XXVC). As a game designer, Dobson's credits included the four-module AD&D-game Bloodstone Pass series with Douglas Niles, and X10, Red Arrow, Black Shield, both of which involved the Battlesystem rules; Dobson also co-designed the Partyzone Knave of Hearts game with Debbie. The publication of Fox on the Rhine in 2000 marked the beginnings of Dobson's forays into alternate history. In his RPG and alternate history books, he has frequently collaborated with Douglas Niles. This is a thoroughly plausible what-if scenario, and as such will please and titilate alternate-history fans, WWII aficionados, war gamers, and others. Derived from a Publishers Weekly review: Veteran video game designers and coauthors of the World War II alternate histories Fox on the Rhine and Fox at the Front, Niles and Dobson reimagine the Pacific Theater in their latest historical novel. With the American navy still smarting from Pearl Harbor and (here's the twist) a crushing defeat at Midway, Gen. Douglas MacArthur secures control of the Pacific theater. After clearing the Solomon Islands-where the authors put MacArthur at the Battle of Bloody Ridge-the campaign moves on to the Philippines, Okinawa and Japan. Following his triumphant return to the Philippines, the Japanese launch "mass suicide attacks" on Okinawa-an ominous prelude to an invasion of Honshu. Trouble, meanwhile, besets the Manhattan Project, and perhaps most ominous of all for the egomaniacal MacArthur, President Truman dispatches Gen. George Patton to the Pacific to command MacArthur's armored corps. With one eye on the Japanese and the other on Patton, MacArthur launches the long-anticipated invasion of Japan. Fans of alternative history will enjoy this imaginative and plausible what-if account of World War II in the Pacific.
