Jenkins arrived in Australia in 1869 and worked on farms in the Ballarat and castelmaine areas, and later as a street worker for the Maldon council. He kept a diary which became an important record of life in colonial Australia. This was the time of gold fever, the Kelly's and spreading unemployment among farm workers and he was in a unique position to record rural life. A man before his time Jenkins was concerned with land degradation, cruelty to animals and the treatment of the aboriginal. This Australian classic is presented here abridged and with annotations by William Evans.
