London. 1985. Peter Owen. 1st British Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. 0720606365. Translated from the Danish by Grace Thornton. 182 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by Keith Cunningham. keywords: Literature Translated Denmark Scandinavia Travel. FROM THE PUBLISHER-In October 1840 Hans Christian Andersen left Copenhagen to travel abroad, partly to escape the critics, before the staging of his latest play, The Moorish Girl. Happily this interlude proved to be a spur to creativity, stimulating the poet in him. Andersen travelled first through Germany to the castle at Breitenburg, to Nuremberg, Munich and the Tyrol. A highlight was his attendance of a piano recital given by Franz Liszt. He proceeded to Italy, where he was greeted with storms and earth tremors, and the Tiber was in flood. Moreover he was suffering from his habitual toothache and a throat infection, and he was lonely. Then, a month after its premiere, he heard that The Moorish Girl had been withdrawn after only three nights. It was a financial disaster. He went on to Naples, where he became truly ill. It was there, however, that he learnt that King Christian had granted him funds to enable him to contmue his journey, and his spirits revived. These pages are by no means clouded with the gloom, outlined above, that Andersen commits to his diaries. Rather, he presents us with a vivid and colourful miscellany of his talents — from descriptive pieces, alive with the atmosphere of another age, to some delightful fantasies, in which we catch more than a glimpse of the great story-teller he was. Thus he leaves us with a haunting insight into life as it used to be in Europe and a suspended vision of his distinctive, silk-hatted figure roaming the byways and cities which were to inspire what he called his 'Poet's Bazaar'. Dr Thornton has provided a Foreword, biographical Introduction, Calendar of the Journey, notes and a Bibliography. inventory #11729.
