He taught physics as an assistant professor at Oregon State University from 1962 to 1965. The following year he abandoned his academic career to join George Lincoln Rockwell's American National Socialist party, but left that movement after the latter's assassination. By 1974, he had become the main force behind a new organization, the National Youth Alliance, which later changed into the National Alliance. He was chairman of the National Alliance until his death in 2002 of cancer. In the interim, he had become nationally known as the author of the best-selling Turner Diaries (a fictional account of a race war in America) and for the National Alliance's extensive propaganda campaigns.
