Tom Spanbauer's The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon was a finalist for the 1992 Oregon Literary Arts Ken Kesey Award for Fiction, as well as the Stonewall Book Award. His novels In the City of Shy Hunters (2001) and I Loved You More (2014) deal with different stages and aspects of the AIDS epidemic. I Loved You More received the LAMDA Award for gay fiction. In 2015 Tom Spanbauer was given The Stewart H. Holbrook Literary Legacy Award for outstanding contributions to Oregon's literary life.
